The Origins of Rapping

‘Rapping’ has long been associated as one of the main ingredients of hip-hop music with artists using spoken or chanted projections of their voice over a beat.

It is well known that the phrase ‘rapping’ pre-dates the hip-hop genre by centuries but it is only until recently scientists have accurately pin-pointed the roots of the term.

The term “rapping” was a misconstrued statement from the 18th century by two English scholars from Bristol, England both named John Hargreaves (no relations)

John was enjoying a cup of tea next to his mantelpiece when he observed his esteemed colleague, John using consistent rhyming words with flow that sounded dope to his eardrums.

Whilst John was proudly portraying his debonair prowess when it came to vocabulary he was also wrapping a pair of slippers to give to his nephew also named John on his 9th birthday.

John finished his cup of tea and commented on his friends “wrapping”,  John looked up and considered this commendation to be referring to his ingenuity in rhythmic chanting, this phrase then caught on and word spread that

was the best “rapper” in town – and also wasn’t too shabby at wrapping too.
